For $150.00 to $200.00 you can buy EP booster units on Ebay that "claim" to be the SO-CALLED
"secret" preamp.
Well the preamp for an EP3 solid state Echoplex is NOT a secret at all!!!!
For less money you can get the "correct" circuit copying the EP3 as close as you can get.
The differences:
1) OURS uses the CORRECT input transistor. A REAL NOS vintage 70s TIS58. This is a MUST if you want the tone correct.
THEY do not use the correct vintage transistor. Thats like making an AC30 that uses 6L6 power tubes.
2) THEY only double the voltage to 18 volts. The REAL EP circuit ran on 22 volts and NOT 18 volts.
The other problem is that a 9 volt battery is only about 8.1 volts (with load). At best the circuit is running at about 16-17 volts.
Thats not 18 or 22 volts.
Our booster TRIPLES the 9 volt battery (8.1 volts in real life) and then it is regulated to the CORRECT 22 volts.
Whats the big deal about voltage you say???
Its called headroom. In this circuit the TIS58 FET needs the higher voltage to sound good.
That equals warmth, punch, tone and sounds "pro" sounding like a REAL effects units and not sounding like a typical "toy" 9 volt pedal.
3) Carbon composition resistors (gives it the old school sounding "organic" tone and feel).
